Procrastination

February 24, 2010 in Study

Most of you have the brains to get what you want / need in the leaving cert. Some people just seem to naturally do anything they’re told… they’ll have homework done as fast as it’s given to them, they’ll attend easter revision courses and grinds classes despite the fact they’ve aced their mocks…

For a lot of us normal people though, we suffer from this disease called ‘procrastination’. So what is it? It’s knowing you have something to do, acknowledging it has to be done and then not doing it. Grabbed straight from wikipedia, they say it “refers to the deferment of actions or tasks to a later time”.

Over the last few hours, i’ve been suffering from procrastination. I knew i had to write a blog post, i accepted i had to do it and then i just couldn’t have been arsed to do it until now. I have this stupid rule of having to blog once per day, so it’s now 11.06pm which means i have just 54 minutes to get this post published before a deadline.

And that’s how you beat procrastination – you don’t beat it at all, you just fool yourself with false deadlines or false punishments to make you work. If you have an exam next tuesday, pretend it’s next monday and prepare yourself as normal. You’re setting a ‘fake’ deadline which means that you’ve prepared yourself for a test as you normally would but when the deadline day comes, you find yourself with additional time (an added day) which allows you to cram even more stuff in to you head.

Easier said than done, i know but you can’t just take some pills for procrastination. If work needs done, work needs done. It’s as simple as that. The sooner you get started, the sooner you can finish – that’s the incentive. Usually if you’re delaying doing something it means you don’t want to do it or don’t enjoy doing it… so that’s why you’ll procrastinate when it comes to maths and not art or something like that (assuming you hate maths and like art).

Anyway, that’s my procrastination period complete for another day. I’ve published this post before my deadline which means my mind can rest and it also keeps the boss man happy (which is me).

government snooker themselves

February 23, 2010 in Study

There was an interesting article in The Irish Times today titled “Thousands of students face school shutdown“. It basically highlights the fact that the government have banned replacement workers so teachers & staff that are retiring or going on breaks for whatever reason cannot be replaced, meaning existing staff will be over stretched and they simply won’t work because they’re not being paid enough (or that’s what they say).

Worst case scenario is that schools shut down permanently and you’re all chucked out of education in to the real world. Teachers lose their jobs and education is scrapped to help bail out banks. But that probably won’t happen ;-) which makes the article in the times slightly sensationalist…

Still, it’s worth noting that the government have indeed snookered themselves and they’ll either have to pay teachers more or hire more staff – two things they’ve said they won’t do previously and continue to say today.

Perhaps someone should bring it to their attention that there’s a big brick wall in the road ahead. As things stand they haven’t seen it and are maintaining their speed…

make us proud! save your country!

February 22, 2010 in Study

YOU are single handedly holding the weight of the nation on your shoulders. You must come up with an idea that will either (a) save money (b) make money. What do you do? Where do you start?

your country your call

Well, it’s not quite that intense, but there’s a competition running right now called “Your country, Your call“. Two €100k cash prizes up for grabs for the right idea. Most of you, if you submit anything at all, will probably submit rubbish ideas, lets be honest  But that’s ok, because people who are older and wiser than you are doing the exact same

However, never bash a man (or woman) that creates. No matter how big a fool you look, one idea is more valuable and attractive than no ideas. Ideas are oxygen to business and many ideas make up an economy. There’s no reason why YOU can’t build up a business and build it bigger and better than the people who have done so before you.

Sign up to your country your call, read ideas, rate ideas and comment on them. Who knows, you might just get a light bulb moment which could trigger something big….

we know what you did last week!

February 21, 2010 in Study

And it wasn’t study! Most of you were on a mid term break and looking at our stats, study wasn’t high on your list of priorities ;-)

midterm stats

Our traffic dropped by about 50% last week compared to the previous week and today (Sunday) it’s starting to pick up again where it left off before the mid term… you just all come crawling back at some stage, don’t you?!

Anyway, it’s back to the grind tomorrow. Monday morning, maybe the start of mock exams for some… for the rest of you this is the time when the old LC starts to get uncomfortably real and close. Once easter comes and goes, you’re in to the home straight so i guess you’re now just heading for the final hurdle…

going blank

February 20, 2010 in Study

Every day i go blank. These blog posts don’t write themselves. Behind each one is an idea. Something creative.

The vast majority of the content i’ve written on this blog has come from blank moments.

There are two things you can do if you mind goes blank in an exam.

  • Give up and leave.
  • Keep going until something pops in to your mind.

Teachers used to say it all the time… DON’T leave until the exam is over… check over you paper, read it… re-read it. In college, lecturers still say that, but most people still leave early in exams

If your mind goes blank when you see a question, skip it. If you’ve got time at the end, force yourself in to writing something for it. View it as a form of punishment. It’s not acceptable to blank in an exam and you can’t get away with it. At least that’s what your brain must think.

By creating & thinking constantly, you’re training your brain to keep producing ideas. If you allow blank moments to ‘win’, you’re basically saying to your brain – ” it’s ok, this unacceptable behaviour is fine… take a break and put your feet up”.
