Higher English..blehh…

Higher English..blehh…

Hey I’m Chloe I’m new to the leavingcert.com and currently in 5th year and there’s just this one question that keeps bugging me. How much to write for higher English? My teacher is just.. I don’t know how she got employed, let’s put it that way. Now for English she works us like slaves, 6 pages of homework every night and it’s sheer pain. How much does your teacher require you to write?
According to my teacher..

1. Comprehensions: We must write one page for each question on Section A and a total of three pages for Section B.

2. Composing (Essay): Here we’re required to write 6 pages minimum.

3. Poetry: Again we must minimum write 6 pages and refer to at least 6 poems by the specific poet.

4. Comparative: Which we haven’t started but again we have been told we must write another 6 pages.

5. Single Text (Macbeth): And guess how many pages? Ding Ding we have a winner it’s another 6 pages.

How much do you have to write for each sections? Like it’s always quality before quantity and these 30 pages of waffle will probably get less marks than 15 pages of sheer brilliance.
Thanks for reading, please reply.

  1. Hi! em well my english teacher says:
    – Comprehensions about a page page and a half for both part A and B (I think, I might have to check that again)
-Essay between 4 and 6 pages I think
-Poetry is opening, a paragraph each on 4 poems and a closing (with ref to the other 2 poems studied) this is usually between 4 and 6 pages
-Comparative is about 6 pages when done properly : an opening, 4 paragraphs and closing with the 3 texts, it can be hard to even fit them in that space sometimes (important to get the point out in fewer words)
-single text for us again between 4 and 6 pages I find I usually do around 4 1/2 pages ’cause i tend not to waffle (though sometimes my teacher tells me I need to beef up my answers a bit more)
so yeah for most things its usually between 4 and 6 pages like my teacher said its just about how well you get your point across and some people can do it in fewer words 🙂 Its best not to waffle to much usually

    • Thank you so much. Everything for us is minimum 6 pages which is completely different to yours. I think I’d much rather prefer to have your English teacher 😀 Again, thanks 🙂

  2. Hey,
It really all depends on the person. If you can get your points across in few pages great! But it is quality not quantity. However, for essays 4 page minimum is what i have heard. Same with poetry, comparative and single but it really all depends on the question and what points you have for the question 🙂

    • Thanks very much, I tend to get my points across well enough but I don’t see the need to keep writing about elements which are irrelevant to the text. I’ve my English essay due for tomorrow 6 pages minimum, I’m only able to do five on the concept so I guarantee you I’ll lose 10% for “not finishing it” as she says. Again thanks. 🙂

    • Thank you so much. I’ve been looking for something like this online for absolute ages. Finally I can show my classmate exactly how much we’re supposed to write. Thank you 🙂

  3. Hi! I get the same as you!! I am in 6th year its bad at first but you get used to it after a while!! Its good because i have english tests every week (i have double english) and it makes it easier because you are used to writing! also the more you write the better you become at it! And the less it will hurt!! 🙂

    • Thank god I’m not alone. It’s completely burning me out, I don’t know how you cope with tests every week :L Hope you’re doing well in them. Thanks for the advice, hopefully my grades improve 🙂

  4. We’ve been told that it is a four page minimum but that since the exam pages themselves have bigger margins, we should be aiming for 5 of those.

She also say that we’ll lost marks for going off the point, or ‘waffling’, so avoid that at all costs!

  5. We’ve always been told the English paper works on a 10 marks per page system, so if you want 70 marks in your Drama question that’s around 7 pages give or take depending on the size of your writing 🙂
