How many hours a week should I study for the Leaving Cert?

Let say most school’s open between 9am and 3.30pm on average. That’s 6 and a half hours per day, 5 days a week – a total of 32.5 hours including lunch breaks and break time – taking away that time and the time you waste moving between classes and you’re probably only really supposed to be focused on tasks in the classroom for 25 hours max.

Compare that to the average working day 9 to 5 minus 1.5 hours per day for breaks which is 6.5 hours per day – 5 days per week – that’s 32.5 hours per week. So the average Joe is doing an extra 7.5 hours per week than you, that’s 7.5 hours that you need to do to prepare yourself for the ‘real world’. But, ask yourself, do I wanna be average Joe or do I wanna go better than this. A lot of very successful people in all walks of life will tell you that they work 70-80 hours per week to achieve their success. That’s around 40 hours more than you’re doing in school so it’s potentially 40 hours that you could use to push yourself and achieve those high exam grades.

Feel like that’s too much? Then create a sensible plan aim for the 7.5 minimum plus 10 for homework and at least another 5 at the weekend and you’ll be well on your way to passing all your leaving cert exams! All good preparation for moving on to college or starting a job after you’re exams!
