Biochemistry?!

Biochemistry. What an awful concept. Back in transition year when I was picking my subjects, I attended four or five sample chemistry classes, sat there absolutely dumbfounded, and promptly chose biology. I don’t want to be a doctor, or a dentist, or any other profession that requires this convoluted subject…so why would I willingly force it upon myself? I wouldn’t. And I didn’t. I choose biology and smiled admiringly at my (masochistic) ambitious class mates. Sure good for them, but I’m sticking to bio. I always found that the results you get from biology are proportionate to the amount of work you put into studying it, and, as logical as it sounds, this is not the case for my other subjects. So a happy student of biology, I’ve been working away for the last two years and doing great. Last week my teacher decided to introduce the biochemistry of photosynthesis. What’s this you say? What awful new revelation is this? Don’t hurt my ears, woman. Stop it now! But she didn’t stop. For those of you who actually do chemistry, then the small amount of it I speak of would be a doddle. But for me, grievously lacking in this department, it’s been seriously detrimental to my ego. On seeing me looking absolutely puzzled (and perhaps a little hurt by the sheer shock of it all) my teacher asked what was wrong…she said, “you’ve got to learn it, and learn it well. Wait til we get on to the biochemistry of respiration – that’s diabolical altogether!” This last statement caused me to stiffen my resolve, don my war paint and just do it. Learn the dastardly thing. Right after I finish this highly dramatic blog post.

If I have offended any chemistry fanatics just look at it this way – you stand on a higher level than mere mortals like me – you are the heroes of our time. Well not quite, but fair dues to ye anyway.

  1. As a teacher of both Biology and Chemistry well said, it is hard to learn Biochemistry and your teacher is write, Console yourself with the fact that (a) we had to learn the lot of light and dark reactions, glycolysis and kreb cycle too of by heart whole now only sections need be understood and (b)its unlikely to be a full question. Stick with it and good luck in the LC.

  2. Hehe don’t worry respiration isn’t much harder than photosynthesis! When we do the biochemistry aspects of biology my firned and I always smile smugly to eachother because doing chemistry really helps in understanding what’s going on. I can see how it’d be a really daunting thing to learn if you didn’t do chemistry!

  3. Thanks Joe, I think i’ve got the light and dark phase’s down now. Bring on respiration!

You’re one of the (un)lucky ones Elizabeth…I don’t appreciate when Biology requires understanding. I’m so used to just memorizing!

  4. And then the ATP does… something… Turns into, um, ATP+? Wait, what?

I should really open my Biology book….

  5. My teacher introduced us to ATP and such quite early into 5th year (possibly in relation to Food/Biomolecules, can’t remember exactly) so we wouldn’t be completely miffed when we came to studying Photosynthesis/Respiration this year. Don’t think anyone in the class had major difficulty with it. She’s a great woman :).

  6. well our teacher told us that the hydrogens are sunbathing in the proton pool and i believe her!
btw grace you look like an emo in ur photo. maybe you should take a picture where you look like a zombie, send it to ur friend and she’ll upload it for you! =P
    twuuuu loffff xxx

  7. Your teacher is speshul with a big S. In a good way of course…fair fooks to me for looking emo with a complete lack of eyeliner…if only you could see the skinny jeans! Dead photos = scary x
