Hello everybody :)

Well hello everybody out there! I would like to say a big and warm welcome to everybody on my very first blog on students.theleavingcert.com.

Hope everybody is having an equally boring Sunday. Got up at ten(early for me) with great intentions. As I was mentally slow in fifth year and thought my home economic’s journal work was a practical joke I have it ALL to do. Yes, you read that correctly I have two weeks to do five journals which contribute to twenty percent of my overall grade. Yes, I know what you are thinking and it is true I’m royally screwed but I have to be optimistic or I will die. No seriously, this journal harnesses the same power as a machine gun. I’m also one of the lucky few to have a Religion project due at the end of September and have no idea what in God’s name (no pun intended) to write about. Holy crap….

Anyway lets look on the bright side…I have my birthday coming up and well that’s about it. My birthday consists of an out of tune rendition of the smash hit ‘Happy Birthday’ and complete calorie fest with my friends. Wow. I really do honestly love my life right about now.

Well how rude have I been, not mentioning my subjects and all that. So here they are in order of how much I want to punch them in the face.

  • Home Economics
  • Religion
  • German
  • French
  • English
  • Biology
  • Maths
  • Irish

The last two are being studied at ordinary level. Booya…I really do despise maths and *shocker*- it really seems to dislike me. We have never really hit it off. I don’t know whether it was the cruel algebra or gruelling theorems that made me turn against it. Irish is another old man I cant really understand either. I mean I think it is safe to say that is dead and gone. But then again I wouldn’t want to anger any Irish lovers because I do understand how useful it can be in foreign countries. Especially, and I speak from experience, when there are extremely annoying french students on your campsite.

I really need to realise there is more to life then this Leaving Cert thingy. It really does invade my thoughts on a regular basis. Jeez…”get out more” I hear you scream. OK..I will I promise. It is just the first scary weeks back at school that are making me this uncool…I swear.

So this UCAS thing. Can somebody please tell me what is going on? I’m interested in studying Medicine but I don’t have chemistry. Is it essential? Also I’m interested in applying to study English, journalism or something along those lines. I have no idea where to begin and what colleges would be the best. If you have any knowledge that you would like to pass on please comment. I don’t exactly have the best guidance counsellor to deal with. She actually is special..like really I think she has something wrong with her mental health.

OK i think that could be enough blabbering and complaining for the day. I really need to take a shower. There is only so much talcum powder can do before you begin to resemble an old man.

  1. I hate to be the one to tell you but your choices are pretty limited as far as Medicine goes.UCD I think would accept you if you did well enough but you need chemistry for UCC and you need two sciences for Trinity. (btw UCD is a six year course but would drop to five if you had chemistry).

I don’t know about the UCAS entry requirements in general but places like Oxford require chemistry.
    Sorry.

But anyway nice blog and you have a very interesting list of subjects. 8 is more than most people, so which do you study outside school? (if any)

  2. The Home Ec journals are the most pointless things I have ever seen.. I thought I had all mine done, but after returning to school I’ve had to go back over assignments & completely change things.. UGH! Which of the optional assignments did you pick?

  3. Eamonn; to answer your question as bluntly and honestly as possible the reason why so many want to study Medicine is because the people with alot of ambition probably have too much ambition and Medicine is the toughest course to get into.
However my interest in studying Medicine is actually to become a scientist by the end of it. Scientific curiousity is my driving force for studying medicine. Then why medicine, well medicine is the most important science to humans, there is still loads to be discovered and medicine is constantly changing. In the future human health and climate change will be the most important topics to global society.

But if your question is why so many bloggers want to study medicine. Well that’s only explained by the ambitious argument meaning we care enough to blog about the leaving cert..

Lastly I don’t know if all that many people do want to study medicine. In my school only 2 out of 48 want to.

Maybe it’s just that the people who want to study medicine talk about it more than anyone else.

What a lovely surprise to find people actually commenting on my blog! 😉
Well hello there Michael..lovely to meet you. Thanks for your information on the colleges. It is true, RCSI, UCD and Galway are the only colleges that would accept me. I feel so loved and wanted!
Now to answer your question in realtion to my extra suject…well I take Religion outside school. I took it up in fifth year and it has proved to be a good choice. At times it is difficult but mostly consists of learning and long essays- oh the joys!
Good day Eamonn..I can’t speak for everybody but the reasons why I want to do medicine is because I would love to help people. I also have a great interest in science and weirdly enough I dig the white coat and hospital environment! Strange but I really like the smell and the caring atmosphere. Yes, I do realise I’m not normal.
And finally Chloe, I know the journal work is so pointless. I’m not sure about the optional assignment but I’m doing the first five. I hope that answers your question!
I really really dislike home economics at the moment. It is such a false friend and it’s really difficult to get an A in I believe. Great.
    Toodles 🙂

  5. I think you can choose to do either the GI food one, or the sensory analysis.. I went with sensory analysis for some reason! The journals are kind of hard to do well in, which seriously reduces the chance of an A.. It sucks 😛

  6. Hey guys..Just to let Eamonn know I’m one of 11 in my year of about 170 who want medicine! Why? Dont know where my interest stems from but I’ve wanted it since I was about five (yes i wrote it down in a copybook in Infants!)I have a love of science, fascination in diseases how the body works and am also not normal, I spend more time googling medical sites and information than I do facebook! I will be utterly lost and devastated if I dont get it! Keep blogging, they’re great! 😀
