Leaving cert – Oh yea, that…

It appears that my somewhat pessimistic views aren’t shared by the majority of the population. Which is a pitty, the leaving cert has won, people are thinking like the board of education wants you to think. It annoys me greatly how thousands of potentially great minds are being destroyed by this circus.

But not to dwell on the past. Allot of weeks are gone in the leaving cert, good riddens i say. The time of the year where companies attempt to market their products heavily upon us is here. And were nearly on the home run to the leaving cert. Personally i haven’t opened a book yet, my ability to study hasn’t appeared yet and frankly i don’t think i actually have one. i guess i have nothing really to add with this post, but to make people aware of how frigging lazy i am!! I also have a bot of a cold starting, and more often than not, I’m coming home, and having a good ‘ol nap.. which sort of eats into your study time. I’ll start tomorrow, i swear.

its just a pitty school takes up so much of your time, that’s all..

  1. I’m afraid Alot isn’t a word, and does not exist in the English language -E-. Allot, however, does. If you’re going to try and correct someone, at least do it properly.

Also, i & I. A common habit which most people don’t bother with when typing. Its easily missed. It also doesn’t make it less readable. The meaning of the word is quite simple to understood, capitalized or not. So don’t be ignorant.

Pointing out mistakes is going to get you nowhere Eoghan. So get the lemon out of your mouth, take a seat, and keep it quiet.
    Cheers.

  2. Thank you for your most constructive and informative reply. How did the internet ever survive without people like you, people who are obviously bullied or god knows – flawed, in real life and spend their days trying to annoy others behind the “anonymity” of the internet (its not really anonymous btw). The internet has had problems with such people ever since monkeys could surf the net as easily as picking their bums.

But anyway, yea. I am a dyslexic, and my unique spelling makes me who i am, if you think dyslexia destroys great minds.. Tom cruise didn’t do to bad. Steve jobs seems to be in a pretty good position, Thomas Edison, well, you have to thank him simply every day, don’t you…

so yea… go away you silly boy! 😀

  3. Jesus, Paul. He was trying to give you some constructive criticism. Correct grammar and spelling are vital to any piece of writing, and he was presumably unaware of your dyslexia (which, on another note, cannot be used as some kind of excuse).

Stop assuming that other people have been “bullied” or something when they’re just giving you tips to improve your writing.

On another note, John Kearns shouldn’t have supplied Eoghan’s email address. An underhand thing to do, in my opinion.

On to more important matters… You have said before that the education system is inefficient and now you tell us that it has had a detrimental effect on the mind’s of young people. However, you have so far neglected to back this up or to tell us exactly what these bad effects are. In your next post, perhaps you could expand on this?

Oh, by the way, John and -E-; “Bout” is a noun meaning a fight or round of violence, etc.

    With regards, Eamonn de Valera.

  4. hi Eamon.. ill make this short….

OK. p.s you might insult some Christians! be careful..

    OK. constructive?

lol. as I said, the internet is not anonymous

i did and hence no..have you read my posts?

OK, I think that’s the smallest amount of English I can use..

now.. don’t you have something better to be doing?

  5. Seems John must personally know -E- to know his email address. Constructive criticism you say eamonn, i see very little of this in the first comment.

    As stated by wikipedia, constructive criticism is;

    – Criticism performed with a compassionate attitude towards the person qualified for criticism.

The above case does not slot into this at all. He merely pointed out grammar/spelling mistakes and made a remark.

  6. I’ll try and make this more about Paul’s post, and less about his spelling or other such unnecessary observations.

The whole leaving cert being time consuming issue aggravates me as well. I know it’s “the most important exam we’ll ever do” all that malarkey, but it’s basically…all we will do this whole year.

Take your average student who gets home at 5/5.30. Student perhaps puts their feet up and relaxes for an hour, maybe eats their dinner. Student commences study at 6.30, doing three consecutive hours with 15 minutes break between each hour as recommended by whoever is employed to do such things. This takes us on to 10.15. Considering that said student needs to be up at 7 o clock to get the bus to school on time, and also needs to get the required 8 hours of beauty sleep, student X’s bedtime is 11 o clock. This leaves our student with 45 minutes to his/herself…and this routine continues on for 9 months.

Does anyone else find this insane?

  7. Definitely true, school takes up all of my time, basically! I have to get a bus at 7.30, I’m not home until at least 6.30, so where does that leave me time to chill out?
I’m so knackered when I come home, but yet there’s still so much more to be done!
And what about telly and t’internet? We don’t wnat them to suffer!

Also, the point on companies pushing their products on is us is so true.
Finding a subject hard? Well then, this revision book with exactly the same material is BOUND to help!
(Cynical as I try to sound, I’m still one of the ones who insists on purchasing many many meaningless books and so on… Good marketting I say!)

  8. Firstly; Paul, I have no idea what you meant for most of your comment directed at me. As for whether I have better things to be doing? An old trick and a bad one. Writing this comment will only take me a few minutes, and no-one can judge the worthiness of another’s doings.

Secondly; Kevin, criticism doesn’t have to be “nice” (although that’s usually a good thing), it just has to be supportable. Paul did make some spelling and grammatical mistakes, and -E- merely corrected them – even if he was being a dick about it for no reason. But I agree with you to an extent.

Thirdly; Grace, these are not unnecessary obversations. Grammar and spelling are quite important to writing (they pretty much ARE writing). However, you’re quite right. I think we’ve discussed Paul’s writing (a lot) more than enough.

It’s ridiculous, isn’t it? How do they expect us to do all this studying AND have a life? Even if you go for six or seven hours sleep rather than eight, you’re still “working” longer hours than most adults.

  9. Yeah exactly, people who work from 9 to 5 can leave their work at home, not feel guilty if they aren’t sitting in front of it all day.

  10. @ eamonn

Indeed. I am usually the last one to be nice when it comes to criticism. I tend to very to the point and forward. However, I was referring to the fact that there was little or no point in his criticism, bar pointing out the issue. Fair enough, He had his right to criticize, but I prefer when people leave something constructive, thus making their comment less pointless.
