Leaving Lovely Latin

Ahhhhh.. Okay.. Going mad from waiting for the next two exams to roll around. Had a lovely evening out last night at a friends and seem to have lost ALL sense of urgency or whatever it is that you have when you’re studying for exams.
I think that this isn’t a good thing..
Anything, Latin.. I think that I am one of like less than two hundred students doing it for the Leaving.. If anyone out there does it, leave a comment, we’re practically extinct and I want to know how comprehensive your history notes are..

For people who want to know what exactly is the Latin subject and exam all about.. Well it’s basically divided into two parts, history and language. That’s all you really need to know.. oh and I have to learn off 500lines of Latin and their translation.. Whooop!

Hmm.. I am also super duper boring these days.. All that there is to talk about is how I did or did not study.. I’ve tried making timetables, lists, guilt inducing posters… Nothing works. I think I’m going to try and stick to Chemistry tomorrow (and perhaps glance on those 500 lines of Virgil occasionally) but the Chemistry is panicking me a bit now.. Like I can’t deny that I didn’t have an AMAZING teacher.. But bits of the course bore me to tears and just seem like a horrific hassle and so I might try to avoid them.. like the theory in the water chapter.. Not a fan. I also think that the history and all that is completely useless and just is put in to screw with our hears. Hiss hiss grumble grumble. Anion tests.. Oh Anion tests. I have somehow managed to take a “mental picture” on the Anion summery page in book and hopefully my brain won’t fail me and I’ll be able to vomit that back up on Tuesday ( I use lovely imagery I do).
Anyway.. Back to the Cicero transtlations.

As a parting note; TOGA TOGA TOGA!
(and how to wear one… giant toga party anyone?)

  1. I have a mental block with the anion tests. I don’t know what it is. They were like the first thing we did in 5th year. Just can’t learn them.

  2. someone should organise one ๐Ÿ˜›
purely for people who are truely dedicated to wasting time on this site ๐Ÿ˜‰

  3. Nah, I hate feminists.

And I was too lazy to go investigate so I used expletives… AND IT WORKED ๐Ÿ˜€

  4. Anion… not going to habit. Please and thank you.

I have to admit bord na mona came to mind when I read “toga toga”.. I have no idea why?!

    Volo oro latin…

Non iens ut venio sententia ๐Ÿ™

  5. LOL. I tried to say my dwarf was teaching me latin. God knows what it ended up meaning..

She probably googled it dude.. girls of the 00’s know how to use computers.

    {So that they can buy aprons… for housework… and clothes for the kids.. and learn to read.. because they have to leave school when they get their arranged marriages sorted. Also to learn to cook dinner for men…}

I can hear the angry cries now …

  6. What’s that about? I’m reading over my chemistry pre just going “I can’t believe I’ve forgotten all of this” :/

  7. ^For some strange reason, when I was a child I assumed that that stood for “Quite Easily Done” and was an expression of smugness after a proof. It still translates that way in my head, at first, whenever I see it.

  8. Haha.. It’s making me a little pukey that all the Latin you guys are coming out with, I can only half translate…. Like grammatically correct opposed to fumbling.
Oh well.. Guess I’m going to have to resort to the tried an tested method of “winging it”.

  9. I online-translated “Quad erat demonstrandum” just there:

    “Dining table was demonstrandum”

So deep. Appropriate for the Maths proofs, too.

  10. Hahaha they think you’re perrrrrrvy ๐Ÿ˜€
Table in Latin is mensa… :/
    Your translator sucks (I hope)

  11. Oh wow, someone else who’s actually doing Latin… There are only 6 of us in my school doing it.
Can’t wait… although I do have to say I’m a bit worried about the amount of history we’re supposed to know. As long as the Aeneid goes well it should be grand…

  12. Ahh nice.
Yah.. I freaked out about my Virgil last night… Haven’t looked at it in about 2 months.. Dodgey.
The history, I’m planning on COMPLETELY BLUFFING… :/
The annoying thing is the standard is REALLY HIGH judging from the marking scheme *hyper ventilates *

  13. But you can take comfort in the fact that translators always translate things weirdly, so it’s not your knowledge of latin that’s the problem, but the silly translators, which makes it difficult! ๐Ÿ˜‰

    ๐Ÿ˜€

  14. “There are only 6 of us in my school doing it.”

That’s 6 more than my school, i just cannot see a pratical reason to learn it….

  15. There’s no practical reason to learn Irish either!!…

… I wish I’d gotten the chance to learn Latin. They phased it out in our school a few years before I started and replaced it with…CSPE or something…oh dear.

  16. Practical?
    *love for Latin shines*
Well if you’re ignoring the fact it teaches you grammer which is applicable to many languages, history and gives you an appreciation for works by Livy, Cicero, Virgil etc! Ever hear of the The Aeneid perhaps yore more familiar with the Hollywood version with Brad Pitt, TROY!
Along with that it introduces you to the great philosophers, Cicero etc.

    *possessive as hell”
You diss Latin (or maths at that), you diss me

    ๐Ÿ˜€

  17. I’m the lovely friend ๐Ÿ˜€
Unfortunately I’ve very little Latin to contribute, seeing as Veni Vidi Vici has been taken.
Dulce et Decorum est, pro patria mori.
    Statio bene fide Carinas.

  18. Wish we could do Latin in my school! But we don’t even have Spanish…
I think it’s really useful and practical – helps tons with stuff like French and Italian (which I’m doing – exam on the last day… boo) but also helps you understand English words too. Plus it makes you seem super intellectual – bet Stephen Fry would be impressed with you guys ๐Ÿ˜€
Cognito ergo sum? (that’s all I’ve got!)

  19. Wooo ๐Ÿ™‚

Haha, ’50 points’ just made me think (hopeless nerd that I am) of Harry Potter – another very good reason why we should all learn Latin, everything is based on Latin in that!
(better go hide in the corner now I think)

  20. Dont worry Roisin plenty of people have read the Harry Potter books, your not a nerd, cus that would mean i am,and im not. Harry Potter is cool, and everyone knows that all the spells and shit are based on latin.

  21. Nope, sorry =[
I have a feeling the Virgil could be taken from the frist 250 lines though..
Last four times it’s been up have been past the half way mark.. Hm

  22. LOL toga magoga. I did Latin for three years, and absolutely rocked. Like everything else I do.
