Settling in

Only today have I truly realised what a great year this will be. Leaving Certificate 2011, is now a rather attractive reality with only 273 days left to go. I have now finished five days as a Leaving Cert. and the school experience is on the way up. Worst thing is though that if this is my attitude now I would just like to skip past the days of stress and pressure so that I may maintain this attitude. My old woodwork teacher always used to tell us that “pressure is only for tyres” but I have adopted this idea into my own philosophy “tyres can’t roll without pressure”. I think pressure is like a catalyst for study, at least it is for me.

It has been a busy week so far. I went on my geography field study yesterday. It was great. The weather was fine and the field study leader was excellent. We went to the beach in Lahinch and later to Doolin. It’s quiet easy actually when your in a group. Afterwards full of enthusiasm, I managed to complete draft 1 of the investigation booklet, now that took awhile but I really had only two choices at the time; blog or do some real work, needless to say I chose geography over bloging (Sorry!), but I’m here now.

Today was the first meeting of the student council and yours truly was elected chairperson, perhaps this will be the highlight of 6th year. Honestly I don’t know what to expect. I’ve never been on the student council before but I’m looking forward to it.

So,.. An bhfuil aon sceál eile agam? Well much to my delight the science labs have been gutted, yes gutted, emptied out and essentially thrown away. So once again my school is a construction site (we were in prefabs last year) and apparently the government has coughed up with an incredibly large sum to cover the cost of brand new fixtures and fittings as well as equipment. Finally, a project worth investing in. Hopefully I will be reporting on my lab in seven weeks time because as a triple science student I plan to personally test out all the new equipment!

Oh and a message for fellow UCASers: The deadline for science courses (including Medicine) is 30th September so don’t forget to get your personal statements in order but equally don’t forget to get a reference. Give plenty of notice to your referee as “a rushed reference is no reference” otherwise it will sound bad or else generic. And generic is a bad thing as we now live in a situation where all teachers give overwhelming praise and affection in references so personal detail is very important.
