The importance of sleep…

I chug on relentlessly with my ole routine these days. Y’know, getting up, school, home, relax, study, relax, bed. But recently it’s the “bed” part that has been getting to me. This is how Leaving Cert works, right? You go to school from 9 to 4. I get up at around quarter past 8, and the morning is spent with formalities like eating and packing my bag. School then takes up most of the day, and at home I relax for an hour before study, and an hour after and before bed. That’s 2 hours to chill in one day. 22 hours is spent doing otherwise. Does that sound like shockingly little to anyone else?!

So yeah, where does one go looking for more time? Maybe a tiny bit of the study, but then it’s all weighing on you and you’re like “jayzuz, I better get started with all that feckin’ work to do”. But no, after all the homework and study, you’re free. That’s the best hour of relaxation. Then you need to go to bed. Bed…and at the end of that boring stint, the entire cycle has started again. It’ll be another 11 hours (if you go to bed at 11PM) until you get to relax like this again (if you finish study at 10PM). What if we just add another 30 minutes…yeah….sure you can survive without that sleep! YOU DA MAN! YOU DA BOMB! Besides, all work and no play…

After crawling out of bed the next day, it’s all good again. Begin to wake up, and the day goes by and you feel like a man that’s slept 12 hours. But then the evening comes, study comes again. After about an hour, suddenly the tiredness is back. It’s cups of tea galore – it’s not healthy but it’s all you’ve got – and you’re running on caffeine-generated alertness. You call it a night at say, 10PM, and then it’s off to chill out again. All of a sudden, you feel alive! Listening to music, browsing the internet, chilling out, it’s all good! 11PM rolls by…oh god…I know I should go to sleep now, what’s 10 minutes? 10 minutes then turns into an hour, and before you know it you’re in a bad routine. Does this happen to anyone else?

Anyway, tonight I decided to neglect the tea and I just couldn’t get into the study at all. I’ve been doing fairly well so far, but it’s an annoying reminder that if you don’t keep up your discipline in this thing, and keeping yourself healthy and alert, be it exercise, diet, or sleep, it’ll catch up on ya…

Bed at 11 tonight so! Or maybe 11:05…
