Facts about State Exams

  • 55,557 junior certs
  • 54,197 leaving certs (incl 4,361 externals, 2,212 repeats)
  • 3,264 LCAs
  • 3.1m exam papers
  • 38m A4 pages
  • 84,546 oral tests
  • 4,655 superintendants
  • 6,469 examiners (to mark exams)
  • 966,634 grades leading to exam results for 113,018 students
  • 12,712 appeals
  • 2,954 students were allowed use dictionaries in exams (because english or irish wasn’t their first language)
  • €66.6m in running costs
  • €9.7 collected in fees

Also worth noting that in the leaving cert (2009) there were 10,109 appeals. 2046 got upgraded, only 5 got downgraded. So based on those stats if you pay for appeals you’ve a 20% chance of getting upgraded 😉
