What I think of the leaving cert. Prepare for a rant.

BULLSHIT.

Basically, that sums it up methinks.

I can’t get over the fact that all these people who have went through the leaving cert and now are making up the decisions that we should continue this state exam because its absolutely amazing, are actually so doused in stupidity for making us continue with this. Its not like we get much option. And they are the ones who should be smart and well educated because they did their leaving! But noooo. See, one big vicious circle. Anyway, I’m sure they know they suck.

Its ridiculous. I’m an angry rabbit.

A state exam decides the rest of our future? If we fail we’re a disgrace to the state and our parents, extended families, and neighbors who live miles away, but they’ve all heard about Mary and her daughter who failed the leaving.

A lot of people can be successful without the leaving cert. And a lot have. All that time spent in school learning things that we will never use in life, or don’t even like. What a waste of life. Life is for doing things you love, and enjoy to enjoy life to its fullest. But look at the pressure and stress school puts on us. Its not possible to live life with this shit on our backs.

Don’t get me wrong though, I love learning, but I love learning things I’m interested.

I also feel that real intelligence is picked up naturally, the education that really matters.

Nobody really looks further than just exams do they?

  1. That was quite a response there HatrickPatrick! And yeah i totally agree, the fun in learning has gone out the window. At least the 10% of fun that was involved. Its all about points now.

Especially Irish, i mean, as you said, we look for buzzwords and pick the sentence the appear in or after. None of us understand the questions, nor what we’re reading. And all that, after 12 years of doing Irish.

  2. Yeah it is. Indeed, i think we should take further discussion to the forum. Go ahead and start a topic Marie ๐Ÿ™‚

A truer word was never spoken, “Nobody really looks further than just exams”
Give you an example: virtually every subject we’re doing in sixth year has now gone “off subject” entirely. For example, history isn’t so much about actual history anymore, its about “Yeah, that paragraph would get you 10/12 but lose that one, it’d only be 4/12”. In English it’s all “De-privilege , (s)he came up last year so it’s a safe enough bet to ignore. THIS one hasn’tcome up in 7 years so definetely give these a good look…”. In Classical Studies, it’s all “The temples are done in a sort of cycle, so its fairly easy to predict what you’re going to get – once every X years, Y statue is on…”, and in French it’s all about “Just translate the questions as best you can and look for ‘buzz words’ in the text, or if you can’t, just find words in the question and look for them in the text, that could answer some of the questions without even understanding them”… Etc etc etc, you get the gist. Just once, I’d really love to be back in first or second year, sure what we did was basic in those days, but at least then the exams were just a means to an end – in french, we learned about France and how people speak there, History was all about learning about interesting events, and Classics was all about reading of epic adventures and battles – the exams were just a routine check to see if you understood everything, not the primary focus of school. Now, it seems, education is just a means to an end – if something doesn’t contribute to your 600 points, it’s “not relevant” and therefore discarded.

To be honest, the more I contemplate the leaving cert, the more utterly pointless and ridiculous the whole thing seems…
(Mind you, my teachers would probably tell me that I should have done 15 minutes of “productive preparation” instead of wasting my time typing this out… Ironic, isn’t it?

  4. This is completely true,
The leaving cert is now all about HOW to answer questions in order to achieve full marks and anything else is useless so don’t learn it. We don’t get to really do what we enjoy as is the case with a lot of college courses. We are given information we have to learn despite lack of interest. We must learn the tactics for answering questions. This is all useful… to certain point. It’s all a little over-the-top really. A little drawn out with an unfair importance.

    So so true amy!

and kevin -“And all that, after 12 years of doing Irish”- its ridiculous isnt it?!
and speaking of irish isnt it crazy how important they make irish as a subject when as soon as we leave the exam hall ,after cramming and writing away endless hours of our precious youth, that most of us just think ‘thank fruck we never have to even think in irish again!’…………………..

or is there more to irish as a leaving cert subject?!

im personally still undecided * que forum topic!!!*

  6. yeah, I’m goin into 3rd year and trying to decide whether or not to stay on after JC and do LC! I’m not caring about going to university so I can’t see any point in wasting two years of my life for nothing!!
