pre exams or mock exams – which is it?

I’m assuming no teacher will call mock exams ‘mock’ exams. It sounds very gutterish… much too street to be accepted by teachers or anyone connected to education in an official capacity.

Is it just students and parents that use the term mock exams? Perhaps it’s just the dubs who’ve adopted the term?

I know for a fact that these exams are not called ‘mock’ exams in some parts of the country… ‘pre’ seems to be a much nicer, politically correct term which i’d imagine is the term used by teachers & the leaving cert powers that be.

When you think about it, a ‘mock’ exam almost belittles the entire event. It’s like a mickey mouse event that nobody gives a toss about…

On the otherhand, a ‘pre’ exam sounds like a qualifying lap on an F1 track or some sort of warm up to a main event. It sounds much more serious & business like. Not nearly as ‘useless’ as a mock exam.

But we’ll let you decide… what do you think the ‘warm up’ exams to the leaving cert should be called?

  1. there only ever called mocks in my school. A sub teacher once called them pres and i think it took a while for people to know what she was talking about

  3. The private school i attend calls it MOCK exams, even on the official calendars and leaflets. I’ve always wonder why they would call them that. The only reason people in my school give a toss about it is the fact that the MOCK is integrated into our grades as the final exam.
